That’s kind of disheartening to hear

He’s one of those misinformed authors who believes that if he doesn’t “defend his copyright” he will lose it.

Also, he thinks that writing fanfiction rather than original fiction is lazy, and asserts, “no one gets to abuse the people of Westeros but me.”

He is certainly allowed to have his opinion on the matter, but to be honest, once material is in the hands of the public, it’s fair game.  People have written what we call fanfiction since the advent of literature, and some of what we consider to be the best in English literature is comprised of retelling or reimagining other stories (Shakespeare, anyone?).  And further, fanfiction is simply another method of engaging with the text, no less valid than any other form of criticism or literary analysis.  

So, in a word:  I love you, GRRM, but IDGAF.  Your opinion is both wrong and irrelevant.  

Shit what GRRM’s ass did not come up with:

• a great empire that fell not long before the nation with which our story is concerned was founded
• an island made up of seven independent kingdoms that eventually unified under one powerful leader
• a big fuck-off wall separating the “civilized” people from the “wild and crazy” people
• a civil war between multiple factions, connected through blood and marriage, who all believed they had a claim to the throne
• a victorious family in that conflict consisting of three brothers: the triumphant warrior who eventually became a fat, drunken womanizer; the stick in the mud who was obsessed with duty; and the wild card who wasn’t afraid to ally with the enemy if it was to his advantage
• the dude whose family has no claim to the throne but was nevertheless the most powerful guy in the country because he was the richest, the most politically savvy, and willing to switch sides at the last minute
• a king who promises to marry a noble girl to create an alliance but then he marries some random chick instead.  Bloodshed follows
• crazy dudes on boats that just float around stealing everybody’s shit
• a throne partially constructed of shit what you stole from the guys you defeated
• a young, impoverished girl with supposed superpowers who winds up leading an army
• a monotheistic religion that comes in from the East to replace the previous polytheistic system 
• motherfuckin’ ice zombies

In conclusion: I’ll listen to what he has to say about fanfiction when he starts giving a percentage of his profits to the historians who discovered the shit that he appropriated for his work. 

(I don’t have a problem with appropriation.  I do have a problem with hypocrisy.)

When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, when the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves, then I will stop writing fanfiction, and not before.

Also didn’t he used to write for that Beauty and the Beast tv show. Cuz I’m pretty sure he is not the first person to write a version of that story.

I love the sch00ling in this post but mostly I am just laughing at the Vikings being “crazy dudes on boats”. ahahaha.
